Re-thinking sports marketing now that fans are in charge

Hi

I'm looking for help, I'm working in UK motorsport, specifically with one of the factory GM Vauxhall Drivers, Tom Onslow-Cole (www.tomonslowcole.com)

We are using the platform of his racing, the crowds and TV coverage (50+ hours of terrestrial TV) to help raise money for a premature birth charity, Bliss (wwww.bliss.org.uk).

I am looking for ideas, donations, links and generally comments and help to achieve our goal of raising £250,000 (GBP) during this season.

I took a look at www.tomonslowcole.com and noticed there wasn't any opportunity on his site to donate. I would highly recommend adding this feature to his website. If this driver does PR and is spreading the word about Bliss, he could easily direct fans to donate on his website, which they probably already frequent. The difficulty with fundraising is being available when people are ready to donate. Luckily, with the help of the Internet, this is becoming less of a challenge.

I would also recommend targeting your fans with emails from your personal database. It's amazing that people will actually take time during their work day to donate vs. being productive ;-).

Posted this elsewhere but we are using premium sms for some high profile drivers to support their charities. it works VERY well. You'd be shorting yourself if you didnt try it.

Have you utilized Tom's fan base and a call to action directly from Tom to "challenge" his fans to pledge a certain amount of money per lap/lap led/mile driven, etc?

These type of challenges can be expanded to partner with businesses who can be asked to pleadge some larger amounts per lap/lap lead/miles driven.

These type of charity challenges tend to get a lot of free media coverage here in the US. I know of a few that are successful in professional golf, and have seen them from time to time in baseball and other sports as well.

Thanks for this Alfred,
We are just gearing up to do this sort of thing, our main money raiser is shaping up to be a premium rate phone/text competition to win a weekend at the racing with Tom, in team hospitality and with the orgainisers throwing in a couple of "money can't buy" experiences, such as the chance to wave the chequered flag. The TV company showing the racing coverage are hopefully going to run the details on the TV coverage.
Plus we have some Ferrari F1 memorabilia to auction, donated by Ferrari themselves, a holiday, and a tour of the McLaren F1 factory.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

you should try using premium sms mobile reverse auctions too. Sounds like you have the right prizing. You could generate 20% more gross . just a higher pricepoint and the same people do it 5 times average. just a thought.

Hi Sean,

Good performance by Tom at OULTON PARK over the weekend.
You might want to have a look at http://www.clicknow.org.uk/cms/cms/index.php - it's a nice way of tying in a charity to your digital communications. The guys there have had a motorsports background, so worth a shot. If you want a personal intro, let me know....

Not sure you'll raise £250,000 this way, but it might help.
