Re-thinking sports marketing now that fans are in charge

Kris Gotsch recently posted a nice write-up about FC Barcelona, the first team to reach the 10 million ‘Likes’ mark on Facebook (here).  It is interesting to see how one of soccer's most popular teams reached this level, but Barcelona is not the only soccer team with this type of popularity.

The following graph shows the top 10 most popular sports teams on Facebook.  As you can see, of the ten most popular teams, eight are soccer teams (shades of blue on the graph).  Only the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics break the top 10, and these two teams only account for 16% of the fans within the top 10.

Why do you think these teams are so popular, especially in comparison to US teams?  Is soccer simply a more popular sport?  Are international sports fans more technologically savvy?  Or, are the social media marketing strategies of these teams more sophisticated than the strategies used in the US?
