Re-thinking sports marketing now that fans are in charge

We have been trying hard over the last 12 months to develop our UK based Website, www.sports-buddies.com, with very little help from UK sports Governing bodies. However, we are now starting work on Phase II of the Website, to make it much more content rich. We want to get the FEEDBACK of all people about what they would want from a sports-networking Website, and how it will help them acheive their fitness goals, and have a much better healthy lifestyle.

So ANY thoughts on how a sports/active lifestyle community Website such as ours could help them would be VERY much appreciated. We are just beginning to make our website much more centent rich, to provide active AND in-active (overweight) people with a sports/active on-line Community, which they can use again and again to get active. We are looking at links to the complete spectrum of sports/active clubs, from your local village football club, all the way up to your local sports-centre.

We are therefore asking the Public/consumers what they would want from our site in the next stage, to make it an excellent interactive tool. Curently, people are able to challenge/invite people to sports-active events, and create a list of 'buddies', and report back on the website their results/acheivements.

To see how a group of buddies appears, go to the Find-a-buddy page, typein the post-code SG12, and search on the sport 'running' by clicking on the running man Icon. This should bring up MY personal buddies.

Anyway, Iam looking to link up with like-minded people worldwide who understand this simple concept, but perhaps would be interested in becoming part of the Sports-Buddies team, and to develop the site MUCH further!!! Your thoughts are therefore VERY much appreciated.....

Regards, Colin Tebb, Founder, www.sports-buddies.com.

Hello Colin,
I visited the site, as a response to your post in Twitter Sports Connect.
I tried creating a profile at your site, however it appears to be set-up for UK only.
There isn't a United States option, unless I overlooked it.
I;ve expressed interest and offered feedback previously.
However, I can't create a profile so I'm unable to offer any suggestions about
further development and usability.
On the surface, the concept is feasible, as it allows members to locate buddies in their communities and if traveling in other locations.
A community could even form an exercise group using the site.
Content and tools would certainly attract members.
You may want to create a kids zone or fantasy buddie component also.
I hope that these suggestions help you to further develop your vision.

Thanks Ar Lena. We are trying to develop Sports-Buddies to appeal to Mr and Mrs Average and their family, Miss Average, Mr (single) average, older epole; infact ALL the people who simply want be more active. Therefore, we must develop a site that caters for all these people in SAFE forum, that encourages the 'sport(active) lifestyle for all'.

The site is not in the USA yet, but there are similar sports-networking sites, but with your help!! Gruops, family involvement in such simple things as match reports (for their 6 yr old's tennis match), to include uploading photo's/videos (in a secure manner) is just a small part of the potential worlwide sports-buddies.com community......

Time for bed for me now!!! (11.30PM BST); BUT speak soon!!

Colin,

Interesting concept and potential use of social networking sites. Have you had much feedback from users of your site as to its effectivess in getting them to be more active? Have you seen any research to suggest the absence of a workout/sports buddy is actually a constraint to an active and healthy lifestyle? Or, are there other, more significant factors contributing to an unhealthy lifestyle and have you considered these?

As an aside, a colleague and I have recently completed a study comparing health risk behaviors of sports fans and non-sports fans. We found sports fans have a significantly higher BMI than do non-sports fans - which was attributed mainly due to poor nutrition. Activity levels of the two roups were similar.

Interested in your thoughts and seeing how your sight develops.

Hi Dan. Thanks for your thoughts. There are a number of 'sports-social Networking Websites throughout the world, which are either associated with 'dating' or finding someone to play sport with-see www.ffnetwrok.co.uk OR www.sportsbuddydating.com. Whilst our site (www.sports-buddies.com) is also aimed at bringing sports, active and non-active people together to do the sports they love, try new sports, and generally encourage an active lifestyle. HOWEVER, we need to be more than just this; once people have met someone to play sport and/or have a date with, there is absolutely no reason to come back to the site.

That's where Sports-Buddies has to be different, and we need to build a whole 'community' which is a useful 'tool' that people will want to return to time after time, AND most importantly encourages people to get more active!! Other aspects we are now developing are to link to: Club profiles-where local clubs can advertise for new players, (linked to a search/map for buddies on a Google Maps page), a sports club blog for every single sportsclub, uploading photos of your sporting event, an events calender, etc, etc.

Clearly, the USA is a potential huge market, so we are interested in speaking to professionals in the US who are interested in joining us, and who have the belief in our concept, AND have ideas they can bring to the table.... .
