Building Branded Utilities to Change the Game

Really brilliant ideas from TBWA / Media Arts Labs over at PSFK:

For most of us, sports touch our lives on a daily basis. We play sports, watch sports on TV, read about sports in the newspapers, talk to friends about them, buy merchandise and attend sporting events. Sports take us away from our daily routines and entertain us. But while people realize that sports need sponsors (in fact, 74%… Continue

Interview with Dan Graf, Managing Editor of Sporting News magazine

Last summer, two years after being acquired by American City Business Journals (ACBJ), Sporting News (SN) made significant strategic changes in the direction of its publications.

Along with changes in content, SN magazine switched from a weekly to a bi-weekly format. Sporting News also created the industry's first daily online sports newspaper, SN Today. Delivered every morning, for free, to each subscriber's email, SN Today is leading the charge in what many believe is the future of… Continue

Packers' Nick Barnett & Other Athletes Connecting with Fans on Twitter

Until about a month ago, like my friend Grego, I wasn't down with the whole Twitter phenomenon. As it was, I already had Facebook and didn't see the need to be micro-blogging about my daily activities. I saw Twitter as a little creepy, narcissistic, and annoying -- people sharing mundane details about their daily lives and fiending for the next Tweet from their friend or even a stranger perhaps.

But I see it differently now. When I started my sports business blog,… Continue

Can Social Media Get You to Watch the NBA Playoffs?

The folks at Mashable.com raise a very good question: Can Social Media Get You to Watch the NBA Playoffs?

According to the piece, TNT's commentators will all be Twittering throughout the playoffs, and the network will use Facebook ads and a FB page as part of the social media/marketing push.

Adding the social component is a logical idea, and I'll be watching to see how well they incorporate these… Continue

Ethics, Values and Professionalism in Sports

It's shaping up to be an interesting week in professional sport, from a 'values' point of view. We often expect athletes to be role models, but when we do we are often let down. It's not cut and dried that professional athletes should shoulder that responsibly, but we still can't help feeling disappointed when their values are called into question.

From a sports marketing point of view, what is the impact of unethical or unprofessional behavior on a player's… Continue

Steelers vs. Cowboys in social media co-opetition

Finally, two sports teams that get it! The Steelers face the Cowboys this Sunday in Dallas, and thanks to some clever work by each team’s digital crews, the franchises are competing in social media spheres as well. Steelers & Cowboys are evenly matched in both realms. Both teams have 7-6 records this season, and they’re [...]

Email Power Rankings for MLB teams

How did E mail become the “other” white meat? While everyone is going crazy over social media, I suspect Email is getting overlooked and underutilized by many professional sports teams. With this suspicion on my brain I set out recently to do a little research using baseball teams as my subjects. The results of my [...]

College sports fans blame carriers for poor connectivity at stadiums

That’s right, fans don’t blame the team [...]

College fans like Twitter more than Facebook for sports

If America’s major universities want to engage avid sports fans during live events, they should pay more attention to Twitter than Facebook, and they should forget about Foursquare altogether; At least what our data seem to be saying. As part of our ongoing “Social Sports Poll,” we recently surveyed social media fans and followers of [...]
