Asian Sport Business Round Up 17th June 2012

Asian Sport Business Round Up 17th June 2012

As Euro 2012 kicks off, Asia's sports business news included lots of football, a mix of bicycle racing, motorsports, martial arts and golf as well as the usual run of media deals.

Global technology producer Epson has extended its sponsorship with the Asian Football Confederation for another four years. The arrangement covers stadium and on-screen advertising rights in major competitions including the AFC Asian Cup, the 2012 Olympic qualifiers and the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil Asian qualifiers.

In motorsport news, Casio is backing a race team in the upcoming 2012 Formula Drift Asia event.
The watch brand will be sponsoring a top competitor, Ken Gushi and the G-Shock – Kumho Tires Drift team.
To commemorate the initiative, Casio is launching a new product: the limited edition G-Shock watch.
The Singapore leg of the race is set for 30 June at the Changi Exhibition Center.

In bicycle racing, equipment manufacturer Shimano will sponsor the Singapore National Road Cycling Championships. The deal includes supplying a timing system as well as mechanics on site to provide support to participants.
The event, organized by Spectrum Worldwide and the Singapore Cycling Federation, will be held 23-24 June at the Changi Exhibition Centre, Aviation Park.

China’s only mixed martial arts organization, RUFF, has signed up with the US agency Excel Sports Management to handle sales, marketing, corporate consulting and rights representation. The first step in the extensive multi-platform media campaign is a 10-episode reality series starting this fall.

Organizers say they hope to reach a market of more than 600 hundred million consumers.

The China Golf Association has finalized a deal with Mercedes-Benz to help prepare the golfers in that country for the 2016 Olympics.
A recent report in the China Daily indicates there are around three million golfers and this figure is expected to double within five years. Mercedes-Benz is a major golf backer and sponsors the US Golf Association, the Open Championship and the Masters.
Company representatives say China will be its biggest customer by 2015.

The week rounded off with media deals. One World Sports announced it has extended its exclusive rights to cover all Asian Football Confederation events for the next four years. Under terms of the agreement, the 24-7 broadcaster will continue to manage the multi-platform rights in America for the AFC’s main event.  The next edition of the Asian Cup will be held in Australia in 2015.

One World Sports remains the the unique North American rights holder of the AFC Champions League and the league’s qualifying matches for the 2014 Fifa World Cup and the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Al Jazeera Sport has clinched a deal with ESPN Star Sports to secure the live TV rights to the Friends Life t20 tournament. The Qatar-based broadcaster will have exclusive multi-platform rights to 25 games from England’s domestic Twenty 20 competition in the Middle East and north Africa.
This year’s edition of the Friends Life t20 competitions began last week and will conclude at the Swalec Stadium in Cardiff on 25th August.

Email Power Rankings for MLB teams

How did E mail become the “other” white meat? While everyone is going crazy over social media, I suspect Email is getting overlooked and underutilized by many professional sports teams. College fans like Twitter more than Facebook for sports

If America’s major universities want to engage avid sports fans during live events, they should pay more attention to Twitter than Facebook, and they should forget about Foursquare altogether; At least what our data seem to be saying.
