Asian Sport Business Round Up 3rd June 2012

Asian Sport Business Round Up 3rd June 2012

Japan’s bid for the 2020 Olympic Games was the main focus of sports marketing news for the last week of May. There were also sponsorship deals announced in basketball and football as well as the latest Adidas campaign in the Philippines.

Tokyo 2020 has taken on four sponsors in the final stages of its bid to host the Olympic Summer Games in eight years. The Japanese capital city made the cut in the elimination round and joins Madrid and Istanbul as a contestant for the chance to host the Games.
Japanese organizers announced sponsorship deals with the sportswear brands Asics and Descente and the travel agencies JTB and Kinki Nippon Tourist. Tokyo 2020 also unveiled a new logo and branding for the Candidate City phase.
The committee named the Weber Shandwick agency to set up its global communication strategy in its bid to host the Games. The firm has more than 20 years experience in managing Olympic bid campaigns including the 2014 Winter Games in the Russian Black Sea resort city of Sochi.
The International Olympics Committee makes the final decision on which city will host the 2020 Summer Games on the occasion of its 125th session in Buenos Aires in September, 2013. The countdown to the London Games is less than two months.

In football news, the Asian Football Confederation has extended its sponsorship deal with the power tool maker Makita for another four years.
The arrangement includes all AFC national competitions including the AFC Asian Cup – Asia’s premier sporting event – as well as the qualifying tournaments for the 2014 Fifa World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games.

The legendary American exhibition basketball team Harlem Globetrotters has signed a landmark sponsorship deal with a Chinese dairy manufacturer. The contract with the Inner Mongolia Mengniu Dairy Industry Group will include in-game activation as well as financial backing for an extensive Chinese tour.

“This is the most ambitious program ever undertaken by the Globetrotters, not only in China, but outside of the United States,” said team spokesperson Kurt Schneider. We are committed to helping Mengniu demonstrate to thousands and thousands of students that fitness, healthy eating, and good character are the building blocks for personal growth. “
Spotlighting athletic agility, theater and comedy, the 86 year-old team has played more than 20,000 exhibition games in 118 countries. Players have included the world’s best such as Wilt “The Stilt” Chamberlain, Connie “The Hawk” Hawkins and Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton.
The Isotonic drink brand 100 Plus has joined the Singapore Indoor Stadium as sponsor and will become the venue’s official drink. The stadium will be part of the Singapore Sports Hub when it opens in 2014.

The week finished off with news that Adidas has launched a digital campaign urging young Filipinos to be original. The campaign, handled by iris Singapore, will include a Facebook contest where fans can upload images of their fashion styles on to the page for a chance to win adidas merchandise. The contest runs until June 10.
