Soccer was a big item as FC Barcelona announced a sponsorship agreement with Nokia India making this company the Spanish team’s first regional partner in India. Nokia’s Indian branch has also agreed to run a campaign increasing awareness in FC Barcelona.
The team recently set up soccer camps in several cities across India and looks to capitalise on their popularity in a country where they’re described as the second-most followed club after Manchester United.
While we’re on the subject, the Premier League giants added a new member to their growing roster of Asian sponsors. Japan-based soft drinks maker Kagome becomes Manchester United’s official soft drink maker in Japan. The 19-time domestic champions have recently added names such as Zong, a Pakistani mobile telecommunications company and the Malaysian snacks maker Mamee Double-Decker to their growing portfolio.
In golf news, KB Financial Group has joined with the Korea Golf Association to sponsor two women’s tournaments in that country.
The group will be the title sponsor of the last major Korean Ladies Professional Golf Association event of the year at the Yeongjongdo Sky 72 Golf Club. The KB Financial Group STAR Championship will be played from 25th to 28th October and carries a prize fund of US$634,632.
December's matchplay competition between South Korea and Japan will also receive title sponsorship from the group. The KB Financial Group Cup, which features 26 of the best female players from across the two countries, will be played at the Busan Bayside GC for a total prize fund of US$775,000 on 1st and 2nd December.
The British upper-end car maker McLaren is using female polo as a marketing tool to create a brand image and to sell cars. The company sponsored the 2012 Ladies International Polo Tournament finals held recently with the Singapore Polo Club.
Company representative Maximiliane-Polz said the kind of people who frequent polo matches make good customers for McLaren Automotive and the company wants to reach out to this market. COMO Hotels and Resorts and Jaeger-LeCoultre were the two other team sponsors for the event.
China’s national broadcaster CCTV was involved with two media deals last week. The network signed with the IAAF to cover World Athletics events for the next six years.
The country’s state television network also signed a ten-year partnership with IMG Worldwide and the Chinese Football Association Super League.
According to an official press release, the partnership will see the two organisations enter into an agreement capitalizing on the marketability of football in China.
Indian broadcaster Sony Entertainment TV (SET India) has agreed with sports marketing agency MP & Silva to the terms of an arrangement for the rights to broadcast games in Spain’s top basketball league Liga Endesa.
The three-year agreement, which covers all Asociación de Clubs de Baloncesto (ACB) competitions, will see SET India broadcast two games per week and a weekly Liga Endesa magazine show.
