Asian Sports Business Round Up 3rd November 2012

Asian Sports Business Round Up 3rd November 2012

The month started off with the usual sports: a little golf and soccer. Other news came from India including a new sponsor for the up and coming Indian US football league and a disciplinary board replacing a controversial cricket team in that country. There’s also news about another phone app and a few media deals.

HSBC Singapore will keep up its title sponsorship of the HSBC Women’s Champions from 2013 to 2016. The event has consistently gathered the world’s best female golfers taken from the LGPA Money List. Participants will compete for some $1.4 million in prizes.

The Dutch soccer club PSV Eindhoven have signed deals with the Thai insurance company AIA and the Dutch glass company Martin Glas. The team will travel to Thailand and play in a game against that country’s domestic champions SCG Muangthong United.

The new Elite Football League of India has finalized a deal with sports equipment manufacturer TMS Sports. As part of the arrangement, the company will provide its new shoulder pad cooling system.

The system, developed with the University of Florida, 'uses a compressor to provide dry cool air, circulating at 200 times a minute, directly into the players' shoulder pads.'

In cricket news, the Board of Control for Cricket in India replaced the controversial team Deccan Chargers Indian Premier League franchise with a new one in Hyderabad. Sun TV Network, a Chennai-based broadcaster won the franchise with a commitment of USD$15.87 million per year.

Unilever researchers found a new way to communicate with Indonesian football fans during the recent Euro 2012 using an app for feature phones. The app focused on the Euro Cup with past tournament details and live scores of the current games.

In media deals, the MLB Network will be the exclusive US broadcaster to the next two editions of the World Baseball Classic in 2013 and 2017. Previous coverage of the events was shared along with ESPN but now MLB Network will cover all 39 games in next year’s tournament.
Sanctioned by the International Baseball Federation, the 2013 World Baseball Classic will feature national teams competing in the US, Japan, Taiwan and Puerto Rico, with the semi-finals and final to be played in the United States.
The South Korean broadcaster JTBC acquired the rights to the 2013 tournament. The 2013 World Baseball Classic begins on March 2.

Email Power Rankings for MLB teams

How did E mail become the “other” white meat? While everyone is going crazy over social media, I suspect Email is getting overlooked and underutilized by many professional sports teams. With this suspicion on my brain I set out recently to do a little research using baseball teams as my subjects. The results of my [...]

College fans like Twitter more than Facebook for sports

If America’s major universities want to engage avid sports fans during live events, they should pay more attention to Twitter than Facebook, and they should forget about Foursquare altogether; At least what our data seem to be saying.
