Using Social Media to Connect Current and Former Athletes

I recently read an interesting white paper from IBM called “The Corporate Newsletter Goes Social: IBM and Employee-Centered Media.” It’s a great read about how IBM is utilizing social media to improve connections between employees, increase productivity and leverage knowledge across the organization. One thing that caught my attention was the company’s effort called “The Greater [...]

Social Networks Need To Provide Value Beyond Connecting

Everyone wants to start their own social network these days. And it makes sense that brands and companies want to jump on the social networking bandwagon. According to the recent Consumer Internet Barometer, one out of every four people online visits a social networking website. But the competition for people’s attention is increasing rapidly. People only [...]

Five Questions Teams Should Ask About Social Media

I recently enjoyed reading Jeremiah Owyang’s post about the five questions companies ask about social media. This inspired me to put my own spin on this and apply it to the world of sports. While Jeremiah discussed the questions from his experience about what companies actually ask him, I decided to write the questions that [...]

Top 50 Most Valuable Sports Social Networks According to dnScoop

I thought it would be fun to use the dnScoop tool to get valuations for 50 sports social networks and community sites. I ran 72 sites through the tool, which values sites based on domain age, PageRank, inbound links, Alexa Rank, and Link Value. It doesn’t include two key factors that are usually used to [...]

Top 50 Sports Social Networks

I just posted a list of top 50 sports social networks based on valuations by dnScoop. Besides this one and the obvious sites that are missing because they don't have their own unique domain name, were you surprised about any others not being on the list? Here's the link to my post - top 50 sports social networks

Sports Marketing 2.0 Summit Thoughts

I posted a few of my thoughts this morning on my blog, Take A Peck. While they aren't nearly as neat and organized as Brian's notes, just wanted to let you know they were there.

Facebook Apps can bring games back to life

Remember Oregon Trail? In the original game you had to buy a wagon, oxen and some supplies and travel from the Mississippi to the Pacific Ocean--hunting, fording rivers, and surviving sickness along the way. It was a fun game...but a lot of people forgot about it once games went 3D.

Thanks to Facebook, Oregon Trail has been resurrected in the form of a FB app. There are currently over 111,700 active daily users, and I must confess that I have been one of them the last few days. The game… Continue

Launching a New Product/Service with New Media

Here are a couple thoughts about what a company can do (on the cheap) to promote a new product or service using new media:
  • Start a blog and let people register to write about their experiences with the product/service
  • Start a podcast where company leaders answer questions about the product/service
  • Allow people to upload videos/pictures of themselves using the product/service. Maybe tie-in a contest where the best (people vote on the best) submission receives a priz

Following Facebook

For anyone out there is interested in keeping up with Facebook news and trends, I'd recommend the following blogs:

All Facebook - http://www.allfacebook.com

Inside Facebook - http://www.insidefacebook.com

Maybe you'll be able to learn something that you can apply to your marketing efforts. In the very least, it's important to understand how social networking is changing the way people keep up with each other and interact, and (obviously) Facebook is a huge player right… Continue

Jason,

I checked out your website and you have some great thoughts about different aspects of sports marketing. I want to ask what you think about using video advertising on the web? For sports, I think it can be a really big way to advertise in the future. At Flimp, were working with all different types of companies, but I'm involved with the sports world. Thoughts on the ideas?

what's up Jason, thanks for the comment.

I actually started reading your blog a week ago.

I'm in the process of creating some flash movies that will read the data from twitter. You will be able to follow each player (that I can to participate) by reading his twitter posts and watch videos the events.
